Auto mechanic repairs versus do it yourself

Their are times when you should take your car to an auto mechanic to get it repaired and times where you would be better off doing it yourself. If you have enough knowhow there are many times you can do it yourself and save some cash but at others, just throw in the towel or it will cost you aggravation and more when you have to take it to the repair shop.

There may be a time in everyones day where we need to send the car into the shop, or even times you plain should take it to the repair shop. Epically if its under warranty, weather it would cost you $5 or $500, go to the repair shop! Sometimes stuff as simple as a squeaky belt, take it in, because allot of times making a fix yourself can void your warranty, and if the problem is really part of a bigger problem and the warranty gets voided. You have a hefty repair bill. Another time to take your car to the shop is for wiring, computer, engine and transmission problems. They all tie into the cars computer, and car computers unfortunately are very toutchey, often causing an error or possibly the malfunction of a computer. You may be able to fix the malfunction in the car, but in the computer itself it may cause more problems.

There are also good times to just do it yourself! A good place to start is oil changes. Almost all cars say what weight oil to use. Its easy to do and you know what is going into your car. Most oil change shops usually use oil bought at a mass quantity discount and not usually oil of quality. When you change the oil yourself you can use Pensoil and you can make sure that you are using a quality oil filter another place the shops usually go cheap. Doing this alone will save you money and improve the life of your engine. Other things you can change yourself is alternators, (be sure to disconnect the battery), water pumps, AC compressors, which you will have to go get charged, all hoses, wheel bearings, gas filters, air filters, fuses, bulbs and many other items. Just be sure to disconnect and reconnect everything exactly as it was

The main factor you should alway consider and you must be honest with yourself is am I confident doing the job. If you aren’t 100% confident, Don’t Do It! It will Just cost you more time, money and aggravation in the end. The simple things can save you the most money!
