What to consider in a first car for a young driver
The best first car for a young driver is a brand new four cylinder car and one with a very long warranty . All the young driver has to do is take his father to the show room and pick out the car of his choice . Dad will write a check for the car , on road costs and insurance and if he is in a good mood, will give you a full tank of petrol as well.
Unfortunately for most young drivers dad drives a ten year old car that he bought brand new and would like a brand new car himself if only he would part with his hard earned money. So the ideal car for a young driver would be dad’s old car if you can convince him to part with it. Assuming dad has treated the car with the same loving attention he has paid you over the last ten years you would be buying a car with a known history. Perhaps you have relatives wanting to trade up. The main thing is to get a cheap car with a known history and one that has been well looked after.
Now lets get real. A new car is out of the question if you don’t have a dad who can buy you one. Your own dad intends to be buried with his car unless he wins a lottery and your nearest relatives live overseas . You need a car so what do you choose?
You need to consider your needs and your budget and a used car fits the bill.Unless you want to spend dollars and dollars at the fuel pump and repair shop you shouldn’t consider a car that has a large engine and is slightly younger than you. Consider instead a small four cylinder car in a make that is common and is priced at the maximum you car afford. That way you should have a car that is economical to run, only needs cheap parts to repair and should be no older than four years. If the car is any older than four years it may be at the point of expensive repairs so you may have to consider waiting until your budget can afford a car that is not too old.
Since you don’t know the history of your intended purchase you need to consider whether to buy a private car or from a yard. It may be more expensive to buy from a yard but if you know that the yard is a reputable dealer then you have protection of clean title and most yards offer a warranty. If you buy privately and don’t know the history you could be buying a car that has no clean title and of course you have no warranty .
Now assuming you have settled on a second hand, popular make, small four cylinder car that is four year old or less ,you need to consider the condition of the car. Have the car inspected by an independent mechanic of your choice . Insist upon it and if the car yard won’t oblige or insists that it is not necessary, consider going elsewhere. You don’t want a car that has been doctored to last the very limited warranty of a car yard and then present you with costly repair bills soon after.
Also you need to consider how your dad has treated his car and how he has made it last ten years. Your dad has probably washed and polished the car ,vacuumed the carpet, checked under the hood for fluid levels and has had the car serviced on a regular basis. Your dad has probably never set out to trash the car by driving near to maximum speed and generally abuse the car . Your need to consider that if you choose to ignore your dad’s advice in handling and caring for a car you will always be searching for money to pay for repairs and wondering why.
Lastly don’t fret about driving a second hand , small economical four cylinder car that is four years old. Consider that with the price of petrol ever escalating there will plenty of other drivers in the same boat ,or should I say car, as you.
