Car reviews: 2008 Chevrolet Uplander
Introduced in 2005 as a replacement for the Chevrolet Venture and Pontiac Montana, the Chevrolet Uplander has been scrutinized by many as an unreliable vehicle. Its “Snoopy” like appearance has hindered many from buying it; its burdened quality has had the same effect.
For 2008, its final model year, the Uplander has seen some quality improvements and only minor changes from the 2007 version. It will be replaced for 2009 with the Chevrolet Traverse.
The ‘08 uplander is offered with a single drivetrain choice: a 240-hp 3.9L V6 mated to a four speed automatic transmission. There are still short and long wheelbase options available (1LT, 2LT and 3LT). 4-wheel disc brakes with anti-lock are standard equipment; as is StabiliTrak traction control. EPA fuel economy is rated at 16 mpg city/23 mpg highway; pretty much the norm with this type of vehicle.
Outside, the Uplander is a carbon copy of the ‘07. Inside, it hasn’t changed much either. However the interior is what sells this minivan…it is loaded with tech gadgets such as OnStar, PhatNoise digital media system and some voice-activated features. A premium seating package is available to add leather trim. It is ergonomically excellent inside; offering plenty of room with expendable cargo area options. Safety wise it exceeds the government standards and has been awarded a 5-star rating.
Overall, it is not a bad deal for the features offered. Backed by GM’s 5-year, 100,000 mile/160,000 km warranty, you’re safe for that amount of time. It would be recommended to deal it after the warranty runs out; but beware of very low resale values. As the minivan market seems to fade out, GM is hoping for a warmer welcome in the Equinox-looking Traverse when it is introduced in the fall of 2008.
